Sources: Chalabi leaked U.S. secrets Slant Index: 7.74 (vote) Citing third-party news correspondents and unnamed US sources, CNN reported that Ahmed Chalabi informed the Iranian government that the US broke the Iranian Intelligence service's encrypted communication code. According to CNN, a drunk US official informed Chalabi of the code deciphering, and then Chalabi relayed the news to an Iranian official in Baghdad. Then, according to CNN, this "Iranian official in Baghdad sent a cable to Tehran using the broken code, detailing his conversation with Chalabi and Chalabi's warning that the code had been compromised." CNN did not discuss reasons why the Iranian official, upon learning of the compromised code, chose to use that same code to inform Tehran about the compromised code. Chalabi strenuously denied the allegations, but his response was mostly ignored by CNN or quickly countered by unnamed US officials cited in the article. The article is consistent with CNN's recent reporting on Chalabi, which is inline with a US policy shift toward Chalabi. Previously a friend of the US Administration, Chalabi has become an outspoken critic of postwar Iraq policy and has fallen out of favor with the US Administration. Related Article |
