CNN's May 25, 2004 headline story entitled "Bush: 'Difficult days' Won't Halt Iraq's Progress" provided more space for comments from Democratic Sen. Joe Leiberman (a supporter of Bush's Iraq policy) than from the likely Democratic presidential candidate, Senator John Kerry.

The article ended with eight lines of quotations from Lieberman, which include describing the conflict with Iraqi insurgents as a "battle against the terrorists." The article ends with Leiberman saying, "this is the test of our generation. And if we don't win it in Iraq, we're going to face it much closer to home in the years ahead."

CNN's usage of Leiberman's statement plays upon the fears of the US population, deeply disturbed by the 9/11 attacks. By citing officials who brand the Iraqi insurgents--most of whom attack military targets--as "terrorists" and providing their simplistic do-or-die approach to Iraq (without opposing views), CNN is promoting an oversimplification of the Iraqi crisis and may be adding to the confusion among the public regarding the US role in Iraq.
