CNN spins Shiite Presidents' meeting with Sunni slant

Two Shiite leaders met in Tehran on Sunday (June 8, 2008): President Nuri al-Maliki of Iraq and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. But CNN.com's story on the meeting provided more space for quotes from a Sunni member of Iraq's parliament than for the words of the two Shiite Presidents combined.

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino admitted that she did not know what the Cuban Missile Crisis was until very recently. She was unable to respond effectively to a reporter's question that cited Russian President Vladimir Putin's comparison of the Cuban crisis to present day Russia-US relations. Putin blames deteriorating relations on US plans to station interceptor missiles in Eastern Europe.

CNN transcribing again, not reporting on US military press conferences

CNN.com's US military reporting is once again (recall their pre-Iraq war reporting) looking like summaries of Pentagon press releases. On Wednesday (April 11, 2007), the US military's claim that Iran is supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraq has been reproduced in CNN.com's top story "Iraqi insurgents being trained in Iran, U.S. says." No alternative or critical viewpoints were presented.

CNN disregards Iraq Study Group, slants Pelosi's trip to Syria

CNN's reporting on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's planned visit to Syria was heavily slanted in favor of the Bush Administration and against against Pelosi. Instead of properly reporting on Pelosi's trip, CNN went out of its way to spin the trip from the Bush Administration's perspective. The article contained several quotations from Administration officials critical of the trip and only one, near the end, from Pelosi's office.

Sunni insurgents may have used U.S. Stinger missiles to shoot down four helicopters over Iraq, the most recent being an Apache helicopter near Taji on February 2nd, 2007.
Discovery Channel scoops CNN on TWA 800 story

Discovery Channel’s recent program examining the cause of the TWA 800 disaster not only scoops CNN’s previously aired ”No Survivors” program on the same subject, but is a far superior investigative report. Discovery’s ”Best Evidence” takes a critical look at the available hard evidence and the government’s conclusions pertaining to the jetliner’s demise. By contrast, CNN’s ”No Survivors” contained a number of factual inaccuracies, the result of CNN’s producers relying too heavily on official sources and failing to verify the information those sources provided.

CNN Presents air disaster misinformation

CNN re-aired its controversial show on TWA Flight 800 four times on the weekend of January 6, 2007. The 'CNN Presents: No Survivors' show has re-opened the debate as to what caused the July 1996 crash off Long Island's south shore. Some eyewitnesses say it was a missile, but CNN and the US government say it was a spark in a fuel tank.

The accompanying article did not contain any condemnation from world leaders or legal experts, many of whom believed that Saddam's trial was flawed.
